Life Around Cheowlan is an afternoon in the village beside Cheow Lan Lake, run by Cheowlan Untold. It runs Monday and Thursday, 12.00pm to 6.30pm, with hotel pick-up from the Khao Sok side and the Cheowlan side. 5,900 THB per adult, child rate for ages 5–11, no national park fee. Minimum two guests per booking, never more than 15, book by 4.00pm the day before.
This is the day the lake’s story happens on land.
Lunch on banana leaves beside the river. The village’s own waterways by bamboo raft. A forest the villagers call Turtle. And a hill at sunset where you see the dam and the village that the dam created, in one view.
Mondays and Thursdays. 5,900 THB, and no national park fee — this day never enters the park.
Every other day here is about the water. This one is about the people who ended up living beside it.
When the Ratchaprapha Dam filled in the 1980s, 385 families were moved out of the valley and given land on higher ground to rebuild on. They became the lake’s boat drivers, its guides, its resort owners. That is the whole story, and it is worth ten minutes before you come.
This afternoon is spent in that village. Not observing it — eating in it, floating through it, walking into the forest behind it.
The afternoon, in order
Pick-up is from your hotel on either side. Lunch is first, which surprises people, and is the right way round.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 12:00 | Hotel pick-up, then lunch beside the river on banana leaves |
| 13:30 | Bamboo raft down the village’s own waterways |
| 15:00 | The forest they call Turtle — giant trees, herbs, the cave |
| 17:30 | The viewpoint: the dam, the village, and the sun going down over both |
| 18:30 | Back at your hotel |
Lunch first, on banana leaves
Our own cook lays it out beside the river, on banana leaves instead of plates, at a long table. Southern Thai food, in Thai dishes — not a version adjusted for visitors, but the plates we actually want you to try.
Putting lunch at the start is deliberate. You arrive off a road, hot, and the first thing that happens is that you sit down in the shade by moving water and eat properly. Everything after it lands differently.
The village’s own waterways, by bamboo raft
Then the water — but not the famous water. These are the small green channels behind the houses, where the village’s ordinary life happens. Someone bathing at the edge. Birds. Monkeys in the branches, often.
You are poled along, slowly, which is the only speed that lets you see any of it. You pass rocks standing in the middle of the river, and the old steel suspension bridge the villagers built to cross between two sides of their own home — the one people photograph and call the heart-shaped bridge.
If you want to get in the water, you can. Bring swimwear and something dry to change into.
ต.เต่า — the forest they call Turtle
Hidden behind Cheowlan there is a forest the villagers have their own name for: Turtle. It is named for a giant turtle they say lives in it — the biggest in the world, they will tell you. People here have seen it. Most visitors do not, and we are not going to promise you will.
Our guide puts the forest at millions of years old. What you can see for yourself is the size of the trees.
Inside there are herbs the village still collects, for medicine and for cooking, and the guide will show you which and what each one is for. This is not a display. It is the reason people still walk in here.
And there is a cave. You have heard all your life that people once lived in caves. Standing inside this one, you stop having to imagine it. However hot the day is outside, in here it is cool, and light comes down from an opening above like the forest is holding a torch over you.
The viewpoint, and the sunset
A short drive up, and the whole story is in front of you at once: the dam, and the village the dam created.
From up there the village looks tiny. The forest looks like the entire world. And you were standing inside it an hour ago without any sense of its scale.
Then the sun goes down over both of them, and the day washes off you. That is the last thing that happens, and it is the reason this is the day we would pick.
How this differs from the lake day
People ask whether they should do this or the full day on the lake. They are not versions of each other.
| Life Around Cheowlan | The Cheowlan Everyone Dreams Of | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The village, its rivers, its forest | The big lake by boat |
| Runs | Mon & Thu, afternoon | Every day, 9:30–16:00 |
| On the water | Bamboo raft, village channels | Wooden boat, open lake |
| Park fee | None | 340 THB cash at the gate |
| Price | 5,900 THB | 3,800 THB |
If you have two days, do both. If you have one and you already know you care more about people than about scenery, do this one.
Who this afternoon is for
Travellers who ask “but what is it actually like to live here?” This is the answer, and it is served on a banana leaf.
It is easy going. The forest walk is a walk, not a trek — if you want distance and effort, that is The Khao Sok Adventure on Tuesdays and Fridays. The water is shallow and the raft is poled slowly; life jackets are there if you want one.
Bring a hat, shoes you can walk in, and swimwear if you want to get in the river. Never more than 15 guests.
Planning the week? How many days you actually need in Khao Sok has the full schedule and an honest cost table with the park fee separated out.

Questions people ask
Is this a boat tour of the lake?
No. This is the village side of Cheow Lan's story: banana-leaf lunch by the river, bamboo rafting on the small village waterways, the forest behind the village, and the sunset viewpoint. For the big lake by wooden boat, that is The Cheowlan Everyone Dreams Of, which runs every day.
Is lunch really first?
Yes. Pick-up is at midday and the first thing that happens is lunch beside the river. You arrive off a hot road and you sit down and eat properly before anything else starts.
Will we see the turtle?
Almost certainly not. The villagers named the forest for a giant turtle they say lives in it and people here have seen it, but visitors very rarely do. We would rather tell you that now than have you spend the walk looking for it.
Is the bamboo rafting safe for non-swimmers?
Yes. The rafts are poled slowly along shallow village channels, and life jackets are available. You can swim if you want to, but nothing about the day requires it.
How hard is the forest walk?
Easy. It is a walk in a forest, not a trek — flat, shaded and unhurried, with a cave at the middle of it. If you want distance and effort, that is The Khao Sok Adventure on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Do I need cash for the national park?
No. This experience does not enter the national park, so no park fee applies. 5,900 THB is the whole cost.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes — ages 5 to 11 have their own pricing. The rafting and the cave tend to be the parts children remember. Every child must be accompanied by an adult.
Why is the village called a resettlement village?
When the dam filled in the 1980s and the lake was created, the villages in the valley moved to its edge. The families who resettled became the lake's boat drivers and resort owners — this is their village. Its real name is หมู่บ้านจัดสรร, the allocated village: 385 families were resettled, each given 19 rai of rubber. The full story is here.
Is there a minimum number of guests?
Yes — two guests per booking. Prices are per person: choose a date and the calendar shows the total for your group — for two adults, 11,800 THB. Travelling alone? Book two seats — the guide and the pick-up are the same for one or two.
Travelling solo? Our minimum is two guests per booking. Book two seats — the guide and the pick-up are the same for one or two — and the day runs for you as it does for everyone.
