The Cheow Lan Lake Day Tour

Emerald water, the Three Brothers, a cave scattered with what looks like diamond — and a raft house floating on the same water you swim in.

The Cheowlan Everyone Dreams Of is a full-day Cheow Lan Lake boat tour in Khao Sok National Park, run by Cheowlan Untold. It runs every day, 9.30am to 4.00pm, with hotel pick-up from around 8.00am on the Khao Sok side and the Cheowlan side. 3,800 THB per adult, child rate for ages 5–11, plus the national park fee of 340 THB per adult / 170 THB per child paid in cash at the gate. Minimum two guests per booking, never more than 15, book by 4.00pm the day before.

A full day on Cheow Lan Lake, in a wooden boat a villager is driving.

เขาสามเกลอ — the Three Brothers. A cave with what looks like diamond scattered across the rock. A forest hidden inside the lake with a waterfall standing at its entrance. Then lunch, a swim and a few hours doing nothing at a floating raft house.

Every day, 9:30 to 16:00. 3,800 THB, plus 340 THB cash at the national park gate.

Somewhere in the first twenty minutes, between the first limestone cliff and the second, the lake opens and the water turns a green that does not look real until you are on it.

The way people here describe this lake is that it feels like somewhere that existed before everything else did. Sky, mountain and water arriving in the same place. That is a large claim for a reservoir that is forty years old — and it is still the first thing everyone says.

The boat matters more than you would think

It is a wooden longtail, and the person driving it grew up on this water. You will notice how he dresses, how he handles the boat, how he reads where the shallows are. That is not a detail we added to the day. It is the day.

A world that existed before everything else in it did.

The day, in order

TimeWhat happens
~8:00Hotel pick-up, from the Khao Sok side or the Cheowlan side — the Cheowlan side is 45 minutes closer to the pier
9:30Ratchaprapha Pier. Park fee paid in cash, then onto the boat
~10:00เขาสามเกลอ, the Three Brothers
~11:00The cave
~12:00Lunch at a floating raft house, then swimming, kayaks, or nothing at all
~14:00The forest hidden inside the lake
16:00Back at the pier, then your hotel

Order can shift with weather and water level. Everything listed happens.

เขาสามเกลอ — the Three Brothers

Three limestone peaks standing together, and standing together so deliberately that the first thing you think is that somebody arranged them. Our own description of it is that it looks like nature putting on an exhibition.

This is the shape you have already seen — it is the picture that made you search for this lake. Most guides do not give it a name. It has one.

The cave

You step inside and the temperature drops immediately. And then, when your eyes adjust, the rock around you is covered in what looks like scattered diamond — mineral catching the light off the water. It is the moment on this day that people do not have a photograph of, because photographs do not hold it.

The forest hidden inside the lake

You reach it by boat, and there is a waterfall standing at the entrance like a doorway — a welcome waterfall, which is exactly what it feels like.

Inside there are water sources, and trees big enough to stop the conversation. The honest reaction, the first time, is: a forest this rich, hidden inside a lake? Most people who come to Cheow Lan for a day never learn it is there.

The raft house: lunch, water, and a few hours of nothing

Lunch happens on a bamboo raft house floating on the same green water you swim in five minutes later. Take a kayak out, or take a book onto the deck and stay there. Sitting still counts as an activity out here, and this is the part of the day people describe afterwards.

One thing we would rather tell you now

The food at the raft house is simple. Plain, honest, cook-to-live food.

We are telling you because we were surprised by it ourselves the first time, and we would rather you arrive knowing. Cooking for whoever turns up, on a floating platform, with almost no equipment and everything carried in by boat, is genuinely hard. What comes out is what can be done out there. It is not the reason you came, and if you are expecting a restaurant lunch you will be disappointed for twenty minutes of an otherwise very good day.

Nobody in this market tells you this. We would rather you hear it from us than find out at the table.

Choose one boat morning, not two

This day and Before the World Wakes are the same water. Not similar — the same lake, the same cliffs, a few hours apart.

This day is the complete one: the Three Brothers, the cave, the forest, hours at the raft house, a swim. It is also the day everybody books, so there will be other boats out there with you.

The dawn boat is the dawn one: 06:30 to 08:30, mist on the limestone as the light comes up, and you are back with the whole day still ahead. It runs Friday to Sunday from the Cheowlan side, and it is 2,500 THB.

Both are worth a morning. Back to back they start to feel like the same trip twice.

The park fee is the only thing we cannot collect for you — the gate takes cash, not cards. Bring it in Thai baht. Everything else is included: hotel pick-up and drop-off both ways, the boat, an English-speaking local guide, lunch, drinking water, kayaks and insurance.

Who this day is for

Anyone with one day for Cheow Lan Lake. If you only do one thing here, do this.

It is a shared group day — never more than 15 guests — and the mix of people is part of it. It suits couples, families and people travelling alone equally well. Non-swimmers are fine: there are life jackets on board if you want to get in the water beside the raft house, or you can simply stay on the deck.

Minimum two guests per booking. Book by 4:00pm the day before.

Working out your days? How many days you actually need in Khao Sok has the full weekly schedule and the honest cost table. And before you go out on the water, it is worth ten minutes to know what is underneath it: Before it was a lake, it was a valley.

Questions people ask

Do I need cash for the national park?

Yes. The park collects 340 THB per adult and 170 THB per child at the gate, in cash only — cards are not accepted. Bring it in Thai baht. Everything else is included in your booking.

What is the food like at the raft house?

Simple. Honest, plain, cook-to-live food, prepared on a floating platform with almost no equipment and everything carried in by boat. We would rather tell you now than have you find out at the table. It is not the reason you came.

Should I do this or the sunrise boat?

One of them, not both — they are the same water a few hours apart. This day is the complete one: the Three Brothers, the cave, the hidden forest, hours at the raft house. The dawn boat is two hours on the water as the light comes up: 06:30 to 08:30, mist on the limestone, back before breakfast. Take the dawn boat if first light matters more than the list.

Is this a private tour?

No. It is a shared group day with never more than 15 guests, and the mix of travellers is part of it. Hotel pick-up from both the Khao Sok and Cheowlan sides is included.

Can I swim if I am not a strong swimmer?

Yes. Life jackets are on board and you can swim beside the raft house. You can also simply stay on the deck — plenty of people do.

Do we sleep on the lake?

No. This is a day trip and you are back at your hotel by early evening. You sleep on land, on whichever side of Khao Sok you choose.

What is the booking cutoff?

4.00pm the day before the tour, and there is a minimum of two guests per booking.

What happens if it rains?

The day runs. Rain here comes in the afternoon and passes, and the lake in rain is its own thing. We will tell you in advance if anything about the route changes.

Is there a minimum number of guests?

Yes — two guests per booking. Prices are per person: choose a date and the calendar shows the total for your group — for two adults, 7,600 THB. Travelling alone? Book two seats — the boat and guide are the same for one or two.

Travelling solo? Our minimum is two guests per booking. Book two seats — the boat and guide are the same for one or two — and the day runs for you as it does for everyone.
