Before the World Wakes is a two-hour sunrise boat tour on Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, run by Cheowlan Untold. It runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 6.30am to 8.30am on the water, with pick-up from around 6.00am from hotels on the Cheowlan side only. 2,500 THB per adult, child rate for ages 5–11, plus the national park fee of 340 THB per adult / 170 THB per child paid in cash at the gate. Minimum two guests per booking, never more than 15, book by 4.00pm the day before.
The same lake the day boats reach at mid-morning — except the light is only just landing.
On the water at 6:30. The Three Brothers with the mist still on them. A stop at a raft house to feed the fish. Back by 8:30, with the whole day still ahead of you.
Friday to Sunday, from the Cheowlan side. 2,500 THB, plus 340 THB cash at the park gate.
There is a version of Cheow Lan Lake most visitors never see, because it happens before breakfast. The mist is still on the water. The cliffs are shapes before they are colours. And the only engine out there is yours.
Most people are told the only way to see this is to sleep in a floating bungalow on the lake. It is not. This runs as its own two-hour departure from the Cheowlan side, and you sleep on land.
What you actually see
You go to เขาสามเกลอ, the Three Brothers — the three limestone peaks that stand together like an arrangement. The day boats reach them around ten in the morning, in flat light, with company.
You are there while the light is still arriving, and the mist has not lifted off them yet, and nothing else is moving on the water. It is the same rock. It is not the same thing.
Then a stop at a raft house to feed the fish, which is a small and slightly ridiculous pleasure and one of the things people remember.
The morning, in order
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| ~6:00 | Pick-up on the Cheowlan side, in the dark |
| 6:30 | On the water. Open lake, mist, first light coming onto the limestone |
| ~7:15 | เขาสามเกลอ — the Three Brothers at first light |
| ~7:45 | A raft house stop, feeding the fish |
| 8:30 | Back, in time for breakfast |
Take this or the full lake day — not both
This and The Cheowlan Everyone Dreams Of are the same water, a few hours apart. Back to back they start to feel like the same trip twice.
| Before the World Wakes | The full lake day | |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | 06:30–08:30 | 09:30–16:00 |
| Runs | Fri, Sat & Sun | Every day |
| You get | Mist and first light | The cave, the hidden forest, hours at a raft house, a swim |
| Rest of your day | Entirely free | Gone |
| Price | 2,500 THB + 340 park fee | 3,800 THB + 340 park fee |
Take the dawn boat if first light matters more than the list. Take the full day if you only have one morning here and want to see everything the lake holds.
Why it only runs from the Cheowlan side
Because of the clock. Pick-up is around six in the morning, and from Khao Sok town that means leaving somewhere close to five — which turns a beautiful two hours into a miserable four.
Cheowlan is the village beside the dam, ten minutes from the pier: small family-run resorts and garden stays, and the reason this departure is possible at all. If you are still choosing where to sleep, this is the argument for sleeping here.
The village has a story worth knowing before you go out on the water: Before it was a lake, it was a valley — the dam, the 385 families who moved, and the grandfather who was forty-five when it started.
Practical honesty about a 6am start
It is early and it is dark and it will be cool on the water before the sun is properly up. Bring a light layer. Coffee happens after, not before.
You are back by 8:30 with the day untouched, which is why this pairs so well with an afternoon: Life Around Cheowlan starts at midday on Mondays and Thursdays, and The Khao Sok Way at midday on Sundays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Questions people ask
Do I have to sleep on the lake to do a sunrise boat?
No, and this is the part most people do not know. Almost every sunrise trip you will read about is something you get because you slept in a floating bungalow. This one runs as its own departure from the Cheowlan side, and you sleep on land.
Should I do this or the full lake day?
One of them. They are the same water a few hours apart. The dawn boat gives you mist and first light, and you are back by 8:30 with the day free. The full day gives you the cave, the hidden forest and hours at a raft house.
Why can't I do this from Khao Sok town?
The drive. Pick-up is around six, which from town means leaving close to five. Two beautiful hours turn into four miserable ones. If you want this morning, sleep on the Cheowlan side.
Is it cold?
Cool rather than cold, and only until the sun is properly up. Bring a light layer for the first half hour on the water.
Do I need cash for the national park?
Yes. 340 THB per adult and 170 THB per child at the gate, in cash only. Everything else is included.
Is two hours enough?
For this, yes. The mist lifts and the light flattens out, and by nine it is an ordinary morning on the lake. Two hours is the window, which is why the tour is that length.
Can I combine it with an afternoon experience?
Yes, and it is the best use of the day. You are back at 8:30 and our afternoon experiences start at midday. Tell us when you book and we will line them up.
Is there a minimum number of guests?
Yes — two guests per booking. Prices are per person: choose a date and the calendar shows the total for your group — for two adults, 5,000 THB. Travelling alone? Book two seats — the boat and guide are the same for one or two.
Travelling solo? Our minimum is two guests per booking. Book two seats — the boat and guide are the same for one or two — and the day runs for you as it does for everyone.
